Calendula

Calendula seedlings - 60¢ per plant
(Calendula officinalis)
They are presently about 5cm high. Calendula attract Butterflies to your garden as they provide a good source of nectar. They are a mix of double orange and yellow flowers. Calendula is hardy annual, so they can provide nectar all year around. This is great for the over-wintering Butterflies. Growing instructions are included with plants.

Giant Swan Plants are great for attracting the Monarch butterfly to your garden as they provide food for their caterpillars and nectar for the adults. This is the larger 'Swan Plant' that grows into a bush providing lots of caterpillar food. You are bound to get Butterflies come lay eggs, which will result in having caterpillars to watch develop, change into pupae and hatch into the next generation of adults. Nettle Tree is also known as Onga Onga and grows to about 2 metres in height and girth. Its large size provides a good amount of foliage to feed larvae on. Trim the stems back to encourage new growth. The plant is frost hardy (endemic to NZ) and will grow throughout winter in most of the country. Growing instructions included with seed.

Small Nettle

Small Nettle (Urtica urens) - 75¢ per plant (50¢ each for 10+)

They are presently between 4-10 cms high. Nettles are great for attracting the Red and Yellow Admiral Butterflies to your garden as they provide food for their caterpillars. They also attract 2 moth species as well, so you are bound to get some caterpillars to watch develop.

If you have grown Swan Plant for Monarch's, then Nettles provide a good second step in helping Endemic Butterflies and Moths like the Red and Yellow Admiral's grow in population. Since some Yellow Admiral Butterflies overwinter as a caterpillar feeding on warm days, this makes Nettles great if you can't wait until next spring for Monarch caterpillars. The plants can be split up or planted as a clump either in pots or planted in the garden. Growing instructions are included with plants.

Southern Nettle are dioecious, meaning that they have male and female plants. So it is best to plant them in groups where possible. A foodplant for the Red and Yellow Admiral butterflies. Southern Nettle is also known as Chatham Island Nettle and grows to about 1 metre in height. It has enormous leaves (up to 15cm) so provides a good amount of foliage to feed larvae on. Trim the stems back to encourage new growth. The plant is frost hardy (native range is the NZ sub-Antarctic islands) and will grow throughout winter. The only downside is that this plant doesn't like high humidity, so in this case will get spotted leaves and die-back until autumn, then it will start growing again. However this is a good winter larvae foodplant in regions with high summer humidity. Growing instructions are included with plants.
