Calendula

Calendula seed - $1 per pack
(Calendula officinalis)
Each pack contains ½ teaspoon of seed. Calendula are great at attracting butterflies to your garden as they provide a good source of nectar. They are a mix of double orange and yellow flowers. Calendula is hardy annual, so if planted this time of year, they will provide winter nectar for the over-wintering Butterflies. Growing instructions included with seed.

Nettle Tree

Nettle Tree seed - $4.50 per pack
Onga Onga (Urtica ferox)
Each pack contains a ¼ teaspoon, which is a few dozen seed. A foodplant for the Red and Yellow Admiral butterflies. Nettle Tree is also known as Onga Onga and grows to about 2 metres in height and girth. Its large size provides a good amount of foliage to feed larvae on. Trim the stems back to encourage new growth. The plant is frost hardy (emdemic to NZ) and will grow throughout winter in most of the country. Growing instructions included with seed.

Tweedia

Tweedia (Tweedia caerulea) seed - $1 per pack

Each pack contains 20 seed. Tweedia also attracts the Monarch Butterfly to your garden as they provide food for their caterpillars and nectar for the adults. They have a nice sky blue flower and grow to about 20cm high, so are suitable for borders. You will be unlikey to get eggs, but the leaves and flowers are good back-up food for the hungry caterpillars of any age. This is the first alternative plant listed on the Alternative Monarch foodplants page. Growing instructions are included with plants.


Puparium

Puparium - $5

This is the perfect place to protect pupae when they change from a larva to a adult Butterfly. It provides a good place to watch a larva change into a pupa, then emerge as a adult. The top clear flap open to allow easy access to add larvae and remove developed Butterflies. This puparium has enough space for any NZ Butterfly species to dry its wings when it emerges from its pupa. It is made of sturdy see-through plastic, with lots of air-vents in the top and a carry handle if it needs moving. The entire lid comes off for easy cleaning when required.
